What Angelique told him was no big surprise.

She laid out a plan much like what Dr. Tom and Dr. Christina said she needed to do: rehab and therapy. It was just going to be without him.

John Paul sat through her narrative as the morning sun rose, the line of light emphasizing the divide between them. The split between them. Both sides of himself were divided, a mix of sorrow and relief.

When dreams dissolved, they eroded a part of the positivity in life. He had dreamed of Angelique for nearly a year, and when that dream became reality, he believed his life would be—he didn’t know what his life would be, but it was going to be better than this. He should have known that a dream built on a trauma, born from The Night, would become a nightmare swirling in the maelstrom that was the Toilet Bowl of Life.

It all came back to The Night.

As he thought about it, it was more than The Night. It had brought them together, but there were things about Angelique that were dark and twisted.

Sitting on the sofa, the room was dark but for the vertical slit of light and the glow around the curtains, the air became thick like just before a storm, expectant. John Paul figured a storm of sorts had touched Angelique and was about to engulf her; he equally understood he had somehow avoided it.

She talked about her drinking and the tick in her arm that had become a fusillade of hammers on her body, how she needed to sober up before being admitted to a drug study for... whatever this malady was. She talked about PTSD and therapy.

She talked about everything she needed to do.

Except she mentioned nothing of the shadows and nightmares—and Anders and the Vampire Killer. Those were the things that had been shredding her humanity.

John Paul wondered about her childhood, if there was some other horrible event that had manifested in these shadows she claimed had haunted her all these years.

Watching her in this gloom, he realized there wasn’t much he knew about her. She hadn’t spoken much about her youth, other than to say she was a little wild in high school. All he really knew about her was that in these couple years, he’d loved her.

Angelique Carlson had been a puzzle he had wanted to take the time to solve. He had wanted to invest himself into finding the pieces and putting them into place. However, the gaps in the picture were wide and dark—and the largest gap, The Night, was an abyss that perhaps had no pieces he could find on his own.

John Paul understood in this dark moment that Angelique was taking the puzzle away from him.

Dr. Tom had told him: “You can’t fix her. Try, and it will drag you down into that Toilet Bowl you mentioned. She has to fix herself.”

Dr. Christina had said the old cliché was true... about the horse and water.

John Paul heard nothing. Angelique had become silent.
